Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Who is Manpreet Kalra?

Manpreet Kaur Kalra is a social impact + equity advisor, anti-racism educator, and podcaster working to decolonize storytelling. She navigates the intersection of impact communication and sustainable global development.

Q: What is Manpreet’s Philosophy?

Marketing, business development and equity should not be addressed in silo. Justice should be part of every conversation – from the foundation of a business to how it communicates. As businesses, it is our responsibility to take this time of disruption to reflect on the ways in which we can do our part in nurturing more impactful systems within the workplace and communities we are a part of. Marketing and brand strategy should be approached with an intersectional approach, recognizing that progress is a process that requires an ongoing commitment to evaluating, dismantling, and rebuilding more equitable approaches to culture change.

Q: What does Manpreet do?

I believe the only way we can make the world and our relationships within it more restorative is by deconstructing the systems we each navigate on a daily basis, which is why I specialize in impact-driven businesses actively working to create more inclusive work cultures.

Using an intersectional systems approach, I work collaboratively with teams to promote equitable, anti-racist and innovative work environments by rethinking how businesses approach and communicate impact both internally and externally through brand storytelling and DEI solutions that are accessible, adaptable, and doable.

Q: What is white saviorism?

White saviorism exists wherever there is a power imbalance, whether that be an imbalance of race, gender, language, or religion. White saviorism occurs when an individual trying to do good doesn’t recognize the power they hold or the privilege they have in a relationship, inevitably denying the agency of those with less power. Though the intention is to do good, the result is more self-serving than bettering, and often incredibly harmful.

Q: What is an inclusive narrative?

An inclusive narrative rethinks consent in storytelling by confronting deep-seated power structures and acknowledging them. It is being equitable in how you represent and engage with different stakeholders throughout your business - from those who make your products to those who lead it.

Q: What do you mean when you say cultural humility?

Cultural humility means putting any preconceived notion aside and letting the people of that culture tell their own story. It encourages us to be the student, holding no assumptions, judgments, or prejudice when interacting with others. It also challenges social entrepreneurs, do-good travelers, and voluntourists to realize we have a limited understanding of the cultures we travel to and explore.

Q: What is decolonizing storytelling?

Decolonizing storytelling is the result of being more inclusive and practicing cultural humility. It erases the single narrative and recognizes the role that colonialism has had on the communities we often work within the social impact sphere. So often the stories we are told feed into the single narrative we have about them - decolonizing storytelling dismantles that story.

Q: Who do you collaborate with?

I work with impact-driven brands and organizations that advocate for global justice, challenge the systemic understanding of power, and are willing to both unlearn and learn together.
